WOMENS AND STRENGTH TRAINING (JC Mendoza)

Should I do only cardiovascular exercise on machines like treadmills if my goal is lose weight?

This is the kind of question that I have to answer almost every day, and the simple answer is NO, because if you add strength training to your workout you will be working your muscles as well as your heart and lungs, improving your health and helping you to lose fat faster and fitting in those old blue jeans that you love.
While cardiovascular exercise is a great way of burning the fat, adding a little strength training to your workouts will earn you extra calories every day. You'll even be burning extra calories while you're sleeping or sitting on the couch watching your favorite TV show, because for every additional pound of muscle you gain, your body burns around 30 to 50 extra calories every day of the week.
Research has shown that regular resistance training can increase your Basal Metabolic Rate by up to 15%. So for someone burning 2000 calories per day, that's a potential 300 extra calories burned every single day.
But remember that muscle weighs more per square inch than fat, so do not be discouraged if initially you seem to be staying at the same weight or gaining a little.
Even as your weight might not be dropping very quickly, your clothes are feeling loose and you are seeing a healthier, leaner and better toned you in the mirror. That's far more important than anything those cruel scales have to say, don’t you think?
Is weight training right for women?
This is the other question that I’ve been dealing with for so many years, and this time the simple answer is YES. Weight training is just as suitable for women as it is for men. Many women are cautious of taking it up for fear that increased muscle means look like men, this is not the case, and the reason is women have very low levels of testosterone, a men’s hormone that play a very important factor in the development of muscle, so as women have very low levels of this hormone their muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will not lead to a massive body, but a figure and attractive body.
Don’t spend more time doing only cardiovascular exercise at the gym, give me a call and will teach you different workouts that will get you in the best shape of your life!
